Common Core: Myths vs. Facts

Realizing that the American education was limping behind the standards in other developed nations and that it was in dire need of a strong revamp, the Common Core State Standards were introduced in 2008. Since then, the initiative has stirred a flurry of anxiety in the education circles. While common core has come under a firestorm of criticism by many; for some, this move has pinned hopes for the sagging US education standards. With the entire hullabaloo around the subject, a number of myths have emerged.

In this blog, we’re debunking the top 5 Common Core Myths.

Myth #1: The Common Core is a brainchild of President Obama’s administration.

Fact: Though this initiative has received thumping endorsement from the Obama’s administration; however, the truth lays bare that the common core was and still is state led. In fact, the birth of this initiative took place much before Obama’s arrival on the political scene. The work teams that developed these standards did not comprise of any federal official, and the initiative was only led by state officials and standards experts across bipartisan lines. With its “Race to the Top” program and $4.3 billion competitive grant program, Obama’s administration clearly supported this initiative and set the stage perfect for states to compete aggressively for federal funds in lieu of adopting the common core.

Myth #2: The Common Core equals to a national curriculum.

Fact: The Common Core State Standards are not a national curriculum. In fact, these are a set of shared goals that lay out a framework for the specific course of study (in English and Math) and clearly define the scope and learning cycle during the academic year. The schools can adopt different curricula (tools, workbooks, etc.) to meet these standards based on the decision of local teachers, principals and others.

Myth #3: The Standards are not evidence based.

Fact: As we also stated in our previous post on Common Core, these standards are research or evidence based. The standards have been released after extensive scholarly research that embodies a quantum of evidences that shine a light on the skills needed for scintillating college and workforce performance.

In Math, the Common Core is based on the conclusions drawn from the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) and the comparative analyses of standards of math education in top-performing countries. Based on this study, these standards formulate a road map to align the traditional American math curriculum to a more focused approach so as to inculcate superior critical thinking and math skills in students across all grades.

Myth #4: Core math concepts are missing or covered in the wrong grade.

Fact: The mathematical progression defined by the standards is mathematically coherent and purely evidence based. The key problem that exists today is the wide variation in the topics covered in different grades across 50 states in the US. Implementing a uniform set of state standards across all the states would call for a considerable and inevitable revamp of topics in different grade; however, it would bring them all on the same page and prepare the students for college and career from an internationally competitive perspective. Also, the Common Core Standards set a framework for each grade and comprise the minimum subset required for the grade. The students or individual teachers can always choose to supplement the standards with more/higher concepts.

Myth #5: Implementing the Common Core will need only a modest change in current teaching practices.

Fact: In a spree to prepare well in advance of adoption of common core, many states and schools conducted studies for the need-gap analysis for common core in teaching practices. Though the content apparently seems more or less similar, the professional teaching skills required for teaching as per these standards would need to be dramatically different from the current ones. The new teaching practices would call for more content knowledge and innovative instructional methods that would instill critical thinking, logical reasoning and problem-solving skills in students to attain great levels of mastery of the subject.

We hope that we could debunk some of the half-truths doing the rounds about common core. We are glad to share with you that the content of all our Splash Math apps is aligned with common core. See Apple Volume Purchase Program to avail the discount.

Happy Mother’s Day! Celebrate Her Presence with Thoughtful Gifts for Your Mom

Posted

My doctors told me I would never walk again. My mother told me I would. I believe my mother. ~ Wilma Rudolph, an Olympian born with polio

Happy Mother's DayMother’s day is a special day for all of us. It’s a day to not only honor motherhood, but also other maternal figures and women who’ve contributed immensely in nurturing us and shaping our society – grandmothers, aunts, and teachers.

Though the celebration of these maternal ties must not be confined to a single day of the year, yet the day offers us huge opportunity to celebrate one of the strongest forces in the world – our mother’s love.

All moms are Super Moms.

The US Census Bureau reported that there were over 5 million stay-at-home moms in 2012. According to Salary.com, these moms perform double duties as cook, money manager, chauffeur, etc., and if she earned a salary for the domestic chores along with managing the kids, she’d make $59,862 in 2013.

On the other hand if we talk about working moms, AmericanProgress.org says that women now constitute almost 50% of all workers in the US, with 4 in 10 homes having a mom that is also a working mother. The US Department of Labor reported that the labor force participation rate for married mothers (with a spouse present) was 68.3% as against the mothers of other marital statuses with 75.2% in 2012.

Kudos to all these moms, who give us everything we need for a proper upbringing! StudyPad salutes motherhood.

Mulling over the Mother’s day gift ideas? Confused? Well, we are here to suggest you some thoughtful gift ideas (that we know) for your beloved mom.

  • Spend quality time with her – she’ll love it the most!
  • Give her a day off and take over her chores such as cleaning, laundry, dishes, etc.
  • Create a handmade card for your mother and attach a heartfelt letter
  • Gift her favorite flowers
  • Treat your Mom to a classic Mother’s Day brunch with your piggy bank money.
  • Make a Memory jar and fill it up with paper slips detailing the memories you cherish with your mother. Let her pick out each slip and read as you sit beside her.
  • Gift her a Blessing/Memory  Book with a nice Mother’s day quote on its cover

Historical Note:

The history of Mother’s Day in the US can be traced back to nearly 150 years ago, when Anna Jarvis, a young Appalachian homemaker, observed a day to spread awareness about the avert deaths occurring from poor sanitation and health conditions in her surroundings. She believed that this cause would be best supported by mothers. She called it “Mother’s Work Day”. After Anna Jarvis died in 1905, her daughter (also named Anna) decided to further her late mother’s campaign. Due to her sustained activism, Woodrow Wilson signed a bill and Congress finally passed a Mother’s Day resolution in 1914. Since then, this day is celebrated as a national holiday every year on the second Sunday in May.

Let’s Say “Thank You” to the Nation Builders on National Teacher’s Day

StudyPad wishes you a Happy Teacher's Day!

Teachers are catalysts for change. They put in countless hours and relentless commitment to mentor our lives. They create future leaders and inspire the next generation of educators. National Teacher’s Day, May 7, is a day set aside when students and parents from all across America honor the teachers by commemorating their efforts in various ways as a testament to the crucial role they play in shaping the future. It’s a day to reminisce about favorite teachers and express gratitude to them.

As you might know, the “No Child Left Behind” program emphasizes significantly on education reforms for elevating the quality of America’s teaching force. To address this issue, a remarkable effort – Teach for America” (TFA) was initiated by Wendy Kopp and her allies in 1990. Since then, this initiative continues to focus on hiring the brightest educators for energizing school education and attracts talented teachers for educating lowest-performing schoolchildren. There’s a league of high-needs urban and rural schools, which present their teachers particularly challenging students and odd working conditions. Kudos to such teachers and tutors for all their dedication and unparalleled services they offer every day!

Though appreciation for teachers goes beyond this day, still we need to express our gratitude to them. Here’s to you, parents and students! Wish to say “Thank You” and appreciate your special teachers even more? There are a myriad of ways to do so. Here are a few ones we know.

  • Gift a “Thank You” card / Send a “Thank you” e-card
  • Record a “Thank You” video
  • Present a photo frame/stationery basket/tote bag/fun wall art/low-maintenance indoor plant
  • Nominate your favorite teacher for any national, state or local teaching award competitions that are held every year
  • Decorate your teacher’s lounge with flowers and balloons
  • Paste a signboard on your classroom’s door saluting your teacher by his/her name

Take a moment to express your love and respect for your Educators, who’ve been the guiding force of your life so far.

Historical Note:

The origin of this day can be traced back to 1944, when Mattye Whyte Woodridge, an Arkansas teacher, proposed the idea to recognize the contribution of teachers annually by writing to Eleanor Roosevelt and other political leaders urging them for action. Mrs. Roosevelt, in 1953, persuaded Congress to observe a National Teacher’s Day. In 1980, March 7 was recognized by Congress as National Teacher’s Day, only for that year. This day, was however, continued to be observed by the National Education Association, (NEA). It was after 1985 that NEA and the National Parent Teacher Association (PTA) mutually agreed to establish the Tuesday of the first week of May as “National Teacher’s Appreciation Day”.

Happy Arbor Day Everyone! Celebrate Your Tree-planting Spirit Today

StudyPad wishes you a Happy Arbor Day!

It’s April – Green month. Earth Day (April 22) followed by Arbor Day (last Friday of April – falling on April 26 this year) – “Green” spirits are in full swing. For revering the environment, it’s time to go all out there and plant trees.

For those of you who do not know, this day derives its origin from a Latin wordarbor meaning tree. Well, we feel it’s important to give you a rundown of the history of this day. The idea originally germinated in the city of Nebraska that had become a treeless plain as all the tree cover was cleared away for the construction of buildings and farming. In 1854, J. Sterling Morton, a well-known journalist, moved into the Nebraska Territory from Detroit with his wife. Being avid nature lovers, they planted trees and shrubs in their home garden and warmed up to the idea of planting more trees as these would serve as windbreaks for checking soil erosion besides offering a picturesque view.

Morton, the editor of Nebraska’s first newspaper, used it as a platform to spread the word about the need for tree plantations. In this spree, he urged individuals and civic bodies to start tree plantation campaigns and also put forth the idea of observing an April tree planting holiday to the State Board of Agriculture. The proposal was adopted and Nebraska observed its first Arbor Day on April 10, 1872, when over a million trees were planted by the citizens. Following Nebraska, by 1920, all other states also agreed to celebrate this day and passed legislation.

Although it’s celebrated once a year, we can do our bit by educating the people and spreading the awareness about the benefits of planting trees all the year round.

You can celebrate Arbor Day in a lot of interesting ways. Here are a few ones we know.

  • Celebrate it in your classroom by holding debates on trees and plant care
  • Organize an Arbor Day concert in your school and poster contest
  • Hold a tree trivia contest
  • Find the best native tree to plant in your area and beautify your area
  • Promote a paper drive and collect waste paper to be recycled
  • Join a local tree-planting organization

April 22 marks the international “green” festival that spreads awareness about the Earth’s natural environment and underlines the significance of everyone’s contribution to save Earth from the fatal effects of global warming.

The global theme for Earth Day 2013 is ‘The Face of Climate Change.’ Many regional and local events such as eco-campaigns, eco-themed games, etc. have been planned worldwide. Over a billion people will celebrate this day and pledge to ‘go green’ in every aspect of their lives by making environmentally conscious choices.

Do you know whose brainchild is this day? Former Wisconsin Senator, Gaylord Nelson. In 1969, this legendary “green” trailblazer formulated a plan to synchronize the then grassroot green initiatives into an annual day of action. To trigger the mainstream environmental revolution, the first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970. 43 years later, mission remains the same – to appreciate nature and encourage Earth care.

For us, at StudyPad, every day is ‘Earth Day’. Since the day we laid our foundation brick in 2010, we’ve been advocating Earth care. The infographic below will explain you how we lend our hand to save our natural resources.

5 Quick Tips to Stay on Top of Common Core Standards

Common Core Standards: Are you Core Ready?

Lesson plans, workbooks, posters, infinite paper work and much more. Sounds like a lot of balls to juggle, huh?

Hey, all you teachers out there – Does the topic of common core state standards (CCSS) send you in a tizzy?

We talked about CCSS in our previous blogs too. These are evidence-based standards that encompass consistent curriculum framework to prepare students for college and workforce. President Obama’s “Race to the Top” program lays the outline of this radical makeover of school curriculum, and is here to stay.

Well, we won’t let you stay caught in the moment and slog anymore devising the next lesson plan requirements. Here are 5 quick tips that will help you to be Common Core ready with Splash Math apps.

1. Prepare your class for a smooth transition. We understand it’s going to be really tough to adapt to a fresh methodology. You will need smartly designed, methodical curriculum and effective professional skills to keep up with the CCSS. The Splash Math program is specifically designed to meet the rigor of the CCSS. The standards have been broken down to problem level granularity and are mapped meticulously. The adaptive algorithm that powers the apps is very useful. It feeds the student with an endless supply of math problems and offers personalized learning. Additional features such as goal settings, performance reports and identification of weak areas on our apps help you cut down on the assessment hours, while instilling math confidence in your students.

 2. Encourage your students to master skills one-by-one. All our apps cover skills that are designed for their respective grade levels. Kids can select the desired skill in their grade level and kick start their math work out sessions. Usually, encouraging kids is a challenge task. However, Splash Math apps lure them for repeated practice sessions with “gamified” workflow that rewards their achievements with their fun prizes such as aquatic animals, dancing animal characters, car-racing games and lots more. The more the engaging practice, the better!

 3. Promote the idea of friendly competition. As most of our apps support multiple players, you can instill friendly competition among your students by comparing their points or the prizes won such as points, animals in the aquarium or jungle, etc. This will encourage them to play more and invest in their own math learning in a competitive way.

4. Track the performance reports of your students. Splash Math apps display a comprehensive performance graph of your students across all skills. You can also subscribe to our weekly email reports to have deeper insights into their respective performances for specific math skills, and track their strong areas and weak performance spots accordingly. While you can be assured that strong areas grow stronger, assign more practice in the weak areas.

 5. Set goals for Splash Math Practice to ensure your students regularly capitalize on this technology-powered learning environment. Set goals like  – 100 points a day, or earn 2 new characters-a-day on Splash Math apps. These small, but interesting goals will keep your students glued to their screens and help you make the best use of iPads in ensuring regular Math Practice.

We hope these tips will help you to conquer your core fears and stay on top of the core standards for math education.

World Autism Day: Let’s Make the World go ‘Blue’!

Posted

Max Kenton has an IQ above 70. Ask him about his studies and well-being and he would start drawing his analogies to crayons, colorful textbooks and playfields. He’d also begin brandishing his school stuff and tossing the names of his school friends. In the first instance, it might not seem obvious to onlookers that Max is autistic.

As per one of the recent autism statistics reports released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1 in 50 American kids has autism (a considerable increase on the last year’s estimate of 1 in 88 children). Alarming situation indeed!

Jennifer Husson Cluff, one of the world’s most prolific parenting bloggers, has been actively engaged in making a difference to the lives of millions of autistic children like Max and her own 8-year-old son Connor on the Autism spectrum through her incredible writing work revolving around the issue of autism. And more importantly, her association with I CARE Foundation that just does not work for the cause of autism but several other child issues. StudyPad salutes Jennifer and all other real heroes today on World Autism Awareness Day.

With increase in autism awareness year after year, the rate of diagnosed cases has almost doubled over the past decade. And, imparting education to this brigade of special kids has emerged as a primary challenge for parents as well as schools.

The idea of intensive behavioral intervention programs like Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) therapy for autistic children falls flat on its face as already budget-crunched schools cannot afford the expenses of such costly programs.

Here comes the savior! The modern technology revolution, in its full swing, has unlocked the doors to a new world of education for autistic children. Devices like iPads have been able to make parents, teachers and administrators go swooning over their impeccable interface that gives these kids complete control over it. Also, these hand-held augmented communication devices offer kid-friendly and intuitive touch screens to refine their motor and sensory skills. Though the iPads cannot be considered as cure for autism, these indeed offer a suite of impactful adaptive learning technologies to these kids with special needs.

Educators like Andrea Leonardi (the special education director of Fairfield, CT) have been among the early adopters of the technology and incorporated iPads into their special education programs. Considering the evangelical coverage of iPads in the media, parents from low-income groups, who have autistic children, have flocked to the philanthropic organizations that extend direct financial support to such families and schools for the purchases of such useful educational devices. Kudos to the nonprofit organizations like the Autism Spectrum Disorder Foundation that donate iPads to autistic children to promote learning and communication!

We, at StudyPad, are all set to do our bit to celebrate World Autism Awareness Day on April 2 and will Light It Up Blue to help shed light on autism. To extend our support for the cause, we will light up our office premises and smart phones in hues of blue! Our awareness spree won’t end here. We will light it up blue online also by spreading the word for autism via this corporate blog and social media accounts on Facebook and Twitter.

And yes, we are not alone in this mission of spreading awareness about autism. StudyPad’s extended family comprises of parents like Veronika W., Jodi H., Chloe R., Barb W. and many others such as our friend Siva and teams like AppAble, who have contributed equally in empowering these kids to enjoy technology-powered education. Together, we do it better!

And before we wrap up our blog, here are a couple of excerpts from the touching feedback sent to us by some of our happy customers. Have a read.

This one is from Fides – parent to an autistic child.

“Hello! I was one of the beta testers for Splash Money. I loved your app and found it to be incredibly well made, but the biggest surprise for me was how much it captivated my son who has autism. This is by far his favorite app. He plays it all the time over and over again and has been learning a lot about money. He has even learned to count coins and started collecting coins on his piggy bank that he previously ignored. Now he sleeps with his piggy bank and counts his coins every day.”

And, you can’t miss out reading this one from Axorth, another parent at StudyPad.

“This app is an answered prayer! – My son who was a premie (14oz when he was born) has Autism, and has really struggled learning math. He has learned more in the last month then an entire year in public school. To the person that said he wishes it would explain when your child gets it wrong I say, sit down and work with your kid and explain it to them. It is a great opportunity to spend time with your kid.”
